What happens during shoulder replacement surgery?

Diagnosis for Shoulder Replacement

An orthopedic surgeon will conduct a thorough physical examination of the affected shoulder joint to assess the tenderness and swelling. The doctor may also ask about the symptoms, including the intensity of the pain while putting slight pressure with the fingertips on the affected area. To detect the root cause and to determine the best-suited technique for the shoulder joint, the orthopedic surgeon will recommend a few diagnostic tests-
  1. X-ray– This test is commonly recommended to get a clear picture of the shoulder joint. It helps the surgeon decide the type of technique for the shoulder replacement treatment.
  2. MRI–  This imaging test is usually recommended to get intricate images of the tissues and organs of the affected area.
  3. Electromyography(EMG)– This diagnostic test is recommended to assess the health of the muscles and the nerve cells that control them. It helps in detecting nerve and muscle dysfunction.

Shoulder Replacement Surgery

An orthopedic surgeon will determine the technique after a thorough examination. Once the severity of the condition is detected, the surgeon will perform the best-suited technique for the shoulder replacement. There are different types of shoulder replacement surgeries that can treat an affected shoulder joint. The surgeon will determine the technique for shoulder replacement treatment based on the severity of the condition. The following are different techniques for shoulder replacement surgery-
  1. Partial Shoulder Replacement Surgery- When the socket in the joint gets worn out, the orthopedic surgeon recommends partial or hemi shoulder replacement to restore the normal function of the joint. During this procedure, the surgeon puts a metal stem, on the top of the arm bone, with a ball on end to regain movement in the shoulder joint.
  2. Total Shoulder Replacement Surgery- It is one of the complex surgical techniques that involve replacing the damaged shoulder joint completely with a best-suited artificial shoulder joint.
  3. Reverse Shoulder Arthroplasty-  This technique is suggested when the natural position of the ball and socket joint is reversed. This surgical procedure needs to be performed with precision and expertise.
  4. Shoulder Resurfacing- In this procedure, an orthopedic surgeon replaces the damaged humeral joint surface with an artificial metal cap without harming the nearby part of the humerus.

Frequently Asked Questions on Shoulder Replacement Surgery

No. Shoulder replacement surgery is performed with arthroscopic technology, i.e., a minimally invasive method. This surgery is performed under the influence of anesthesia which makes the surgical procedure painless. However, post shoulder replacement surgery, during the recovery duration, you may feel pain and discomfort that can be managed with the prescribed medication by your orthopedic doctor.

The shoulder replacement surgery duration may take 1-2 hours. However, this is an approximate duration which may differ based on the type of artificial implant used for the shoulder replacement, the severity of the condition, etc.

There is no specific time frame where you can resume work post shoulder replacement surgery. The time limit may differ from one patient to another for resuming work post-surgery depending on the factors, including the severity of the surgery, type of profession you are into, etc.

You may have to stay in the hospital for 2-3 days post shoulder replacement surgery. However, the stay in the hospital may differ from one patient to another based on the severity of the condition, if the patient is showing any irregular signs post-surgery, etc.

The average recovery duration may take 10-12 days when the patient starts doing regular activities without any major issues. However, the complete recovery may take 3-4 months. The recovery duration also includes physiotherapy that helps the patient restore the full range of motion in the operated shoulder joint.

You should consult an orthopedic surgeon who has specialization and fellowship in joint replacement surgeries. Shoulder replacement is a critical surgery and needs expertise as well as precision to get effective treatment. Therefore, it is always advisable to consult expert orthopedic surgery for shoulder replacement surgery.

Being new to Hyderabad, luckily came to know about Doctor Puneet (Vascular Surgeon - Diabetic Foot care) through Google (Good) Reviews.Hospital was good with multi specialist doctors. Clean environment with seating facilities, restroom, drinking water. Receptionist, nurses, pharmacy staffs were so kind & helpful. As far as i know, it is Walk - In to meet any Doctor (First cum first served). Hospital is equipped with latest technology medical machine.Met Dr. Puneet Joopali for Diabetic Vascular issue for my elderly MIL. We were very happy & satisfied after consulting Doc. He speaks well, highly knowledgeable, easy to converse, explains well. Met him again to clear a doubt even without an appointment. He was kind enough to explain. I got his number & consulted him for general medical advice. He instantly replied over message. Very difficult to find doctors of this type who are easy to approach & get best advice. For Diabetics, Dr. Puneeth directed us to Dr. SVP Reddy. He was also easy to talk with, consulted well & with his medication sugar level is under control.Only one disadvantage we felt was that the prescribed tablets were Hyderabad manufactured & they were available only in hospital pharmacy. We couldn't get it in outside big pharmacy in Hyderabad city. Thanks to both doctors and also Max health Staffs.
